Introduction

What is Agouti?

Camera traps provide an easy and non-invasive way to study wildlife. However, manually processing the millions of images that a typical study generates quickly becomes a challenge. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Agouti can automatically recognise many species and filter blank images.

Agouti is a complete solution for organisations and professionals that use camera traps to survey wildlife. It lets camera trappers organise surveys, efficiently process images, obtain standardised output of the results, and safely archive your data. Agouti follows the Camera Trap Data Package standard, a community developed data exchange format for camera trap data.

Workflow

After collecting cameras from the field, users upload the entire contents of the memory cards to Agouti. You enter the location and deployment details and Agouti automatically pulls timestamps and other metadata from the images, and groups images into sequences that represent the same event. You then have the option to apply one of our automatic species classification models, or inspect each image sequence manually and annotate them with one or more observations, using an easy interface.

Whenever you like, your data can be exported as a standardised Camera Trap Data Package for analysis in software such as R. We recommend using the R package camtraptor to get started. It offers several commonly used functions, including conversion to other formats.

Private & Secure

Agouti takes privacy, data ownership and security very seriously. All data you upload to Agouti remains fully yours: Agouti does not claim ownership over any part of your data. We do not use, share or distribute your data to third parties without your explicit written permission. Your data is also not used by Wageningen University to train or improve AI models unless you have provided written consent. You always retain full control over who can access your projects, allowing you to collaborate on your own terms and timeline.

All data in Agouti is stored exclusively in two data centres owned and operated by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. These facilities provide a fully redundant infrastructure, ensuring reliable access to your data and minimising the risk of data loss due to hardware failure, user error or system crashes. Agouti does not use commercial cloud services for data storage.

We do not collect, nor do we utilise third‑party services to collect, user‑specific information about site usage. We do collect statistical data on site use for the purpose of error and performance monitoring. These statistical data do not include user‑specific information, and Agouti does not track or profile its users.

Personal data are processed in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. Access to Agouti servers is restricted to authorised Wageningen University employees, who receive explicit access rights only for the specific tasks they need to perform. All servers are kept up to date and receive security patches at least once per month. Encryption is applied to all Agouti websites and APIs through which data are transferred or managed, and firewalls are in place to prevent unauthorised access and misuse.
